Our Luminescent watercolors, unlike anything ever seen in watercolor, simulate the glitter of a watery surface or the luster of mother-of-pearl. They're made from mica pigment, thin transparent particles coated with highly reflective metal oxides. When applied, they create a sense of depth and a sheen that changes with the angle of reflection and observation, sometimes reflecting their complementary colors.

Interference and Pearlescent Colors

Interference and Pearlescent colors appear almost colorless when applied to white paper, but applied over a dark color, they bounce back gleaming hue. When used on a white or very light underpainting, these paints will begin to reveal their colors at increasing angles. Use this characteristic to implicate undulating water or the subtle shimmer of a dragonfly's wing.

The primary difference between Interference and Pearlescents is that Pearlescents offer a near colorless sheen, while Interference colors have the addition of a hue.

Iridescent Colors

Iridescents offer strong reflectance and more saturated colors than our Interference colors, yet they remain semi-transparent. They speak metallic surfaces or surfaces with high radiance, such as that of a Morphadae butterfly wing.

Mix Iridescents with your standard colors to add the warm luster of a burnished metal, or use in full mass tone to accent a reflective surface.

Duochrome Colors

If a paint could be considered clever, then our Duochromes would certainly qualify. This selection may be just the thing you have been looking for to liven up your work.

Imagine a paint that shifts color based on your viewing angle. For instance, look at our Duochrome Cactus Flower head on and you will see something of a Burnt Sienna. However, shift your eyes a bit and a glistening violet appears!

Each Duochrome consists of a primary (head on) and secondary (off angle) color. Some of the combinations are soothing complements while others present a delightful contrast. They reflect light and provide a fascinating sense of depth.
