SUMI: Spiritual Harmony

Experience the joy of painting in sumi and brilliant asian watercolors during a three-day workshop. You will learn to master basic sumi strokes while controlling the use of water, ink, and color with an objective to capture the spirit and vitality of the subject. Elizabeth believes that "you are an artist if you hold the brush in your hand," and that "painting to theme music gives each artist a sense of peace and harmony."
The class structure will progress in the following format:
- Day One: Materials, basic strokes and unique traditions, and beauty of the sumi art form.
- Day Two: Create several small sumi paintings.
- Day Three: Complete your paintings by mounting on decorative asian papers.
$75 per day

Kay will show you under-painting, glazing, and sectional wet into wet techniques creating a very personal portrait of flowers. Much of the workshop will focus on the planning process and executing the various stages of the painting with an emphasis on light, timing, water to paint ratio, and the importance of letting the medium work for you. Color mixing and values will also be stressed. This workshop is recommended for all levels, and bringing floral subject matter is suggested.

This fun two-day workshop is packed full of information for the intermediate to advanced watercolorist.
Day One: Susie starts by showing the elements that make a successful seascape painting. Students will learn how to create the forms of waves, breakers, rocks, sea foam, and wet sand. Susie will discuss and demonstrate the importance of color, sunlight, atmosphere, and composition. Practice exercises will help you build a foundation using these forms, and also help plan your composition before actually starting a painting.
Day Two: Susie starts with a brief demo following with a review of painting techniques. Students will then start their seascape painting while Susie offers individual instruction and encouragement helping you effectively paint the sea and shore. Photo references will be available or you may wish to bring your own photos to work from.
