Agnes Geets was born in Mechelen, situated between Antwerp and Brussels in Belgium, and is now based in the small city of Duffel.
From a very young age, she always loved drawing, and around 20 years ago, she became fascinated by the watercolor paintings exhibited in the hallways of a hospital in Mechelen. As her children were grown by then, she decided to begin working in the wonderful medium of watercolor. This was a challenge for her, dividing her time between her work as an accountant, her family, her friends, and her desire to paint—first by joining a weekly group of other enthusiasts.
Although mainly self-taught, about 15 years ago she decided to participate each year in a workshop given by a renowned artist she admires. Thus, she has painted with Gerda Mentens, Iain Stewart, Stan Miller, Thomas Schaller, and David Poxon. Joseph Zbukvic and Chien Chung Wei could not be missed either. From each artist, she has learned to hone her natural ability and skills, each one influencing her work, inspiring her, and helping to make her the artist she is today.
The subjects she paints are varied, as she loves the challenges each one brings—often taking her out of her comfort zone. She is equally at ease painting in the quiet of her home or en plein air.
Although figure and portrait painting are her first loves and her main strengths, she is fascinated by how light and shadow can express features in a face and always tries to capture the personality.
Agnes is a member of AIB, the Belgian Watercolor Society, and IWS Belgium.
She has participated in various exhibitions, including those of the Belgian Watercolor Society, the International Watercolor Exhibition in Uckange (France), and the Festival International de l’Aquarelle de Liège (Belgium). She was invited in 2021 to George Politis’s Watercolor International 5 and was also a Top 200 finalist that year for IWM (UK). She was again selected in the Top 200 for IWM 2024, where her efforts were rewarded with an Excellence Award.
She has exhibited for several years in the International Watercolor Exhibition of Fabriano in Italy and has also served as Country Leader for Belgium for a few years.
