Here’s a Q & A with Jolene Olivier
¿Por qué haces arte?
Art became a way for me to create something permanent after years of investing my time into looking after my fairly big family. Art is the place I slow down & often get very quiet and meditative
¿Cuánto tiempo llevas pintando?
I have always made art & been creative. My watercolours are also unusual in my process as they really reflect my drawing background, I almost want to call them drawings in watercolour as they are very lime and wash based
Did you have form al art training?
I had a wonderful art teacher in elementary/primary school and I believe she laid a very strong foundation for me. High School I also had the privilege of access to an art centre with really great teachers. I studied Textile Design there & believe it has influenced my work towards simplification and unusual layout. After school I sudied a degree in art, which was very conceptual. It killed art for me so I took a ten year break before returning to drawing late at night when the whole family was asleep. I had to teach myself everything I know about watercolour. Luckily I love geeking out , so am forever going deeper into it
¿Eres artista profesional o aficionado?
I am very blessed that art gas been my passion and our bread and butter for the last three years
¿En quién o en qué te inspiras?
I gather inspiration from many fields. Everyday mundane, the way light falls, ideas I read about, and lots of artists throughout history
¿Qué tipo de música escuchas mientras pintas?
I love quiet while I paint. I often also paint while supporting my children in schooling or hanging out with friends. In an ideal getting to really indulge, I would listen to classical or indie music, something gentle and human. I also love listening to podcasts while painting but sometimes the words take me out of my glow state, so I turn it off.
¿Has tenido algún mentor?
No but I have had very pivotal moments when certain people encouraging me brought me back from the edge of giving up altogether on art
¿Pintas todos los días?
I wish!
¿Pintas una pieza a la vez o trabajas en varias simultáneamente?
I love to juggle a few , I also find the switching between pieces help me out of a funk when it happens
¿Primero creas un boceto conceptual?
No, I alter as I go but I think about it a lot, so maybe it’s just a piece in my head
¿Prefieres pintar en estudio o al aire libre?
I was hard bent on plein air but the short flowering of my subject has definitely necessitated in studio from photographic references
¿Cuántos colores básicos utilizas?
Some works literally only have one, the Corals gave about 6 for subtle differences
¿Tubos, sartenes o palitos?
ALL of them!
¿Utilizas líquido de enmascarar?
I haven’t found one that works for me yet
¿Cuándo sabes que tu obra está terminada?
I try to step away and stop earlier but sometimes I probably overwork, I get very into the details
