“Being a painter is more than mastery of techniques. I strive to express how I feel about my world and my emotional response to it. It’s my desire to communicate. My tools are that of a painter: brush, paint and paper. My greatest fulfillment comes when working en plein air (outdoors). Working quickly has taught me to trust what I see. Striving to capture the effects of light as the scene is changing keeps my response honest and direct.”
Robert Henri expresses the notion superbly:
“The sketch hunter moves through life as he finds it, not passing negligently the things he loves, but stopping to know them, and to note them down in the shorthand of his sketchbook”.
