“I have been working with watercolour continuously since 1996, when I won the Alastair Salveson Scholarship to tour China for 3 months, where I drew and painted using only the materials I carried with me. Watercolour seemed a logical choice for a medium, as I did not want to carry a lot of paint. My first attempts were not very successful, and it took a moment of despair (while working on a piece that was not going very well) to discover how I could get the most out of the medium. Ever since then, I have been using watercolour in probably a less conventional way than most artists, since all my techniques have been developed through experimentation. I continue to enjoy experimenting – I will try to do things differently to surprise myself and my viewer. Through this way of working, I have discovered many techniques which have helped me develop a unique signature style. This is partly the reason why I use white in my process – I leave nothing out that will help me with the painting process. It must be stressed however, that technique is a means to an end, and not an end in itself.

I love the intensity, the ease of use, the excellent quality and the incredible variety of colours in the DANIEL SMITH range. They always respond the same way, regardless of the substrate. This is important to me as there are so many variables when painting – being able to rely on the paint quality is a major component of a successful work of art. Simply put, DANIEL SMITH gets the quality and consistency right every time.”
