Fernando de Paiva from Brazil demonstrated his favorite palette and painting techniques using gouache.
Here’s a brief Q&A with him:
If you could take only three colors to paint with on a deserted island, which three would you choose?
That’s a very difficult question! If it was gouache, i would take Pyrrol Red, Ultramarine Blue and Hansa Yellow.
What art event are you looking forward to?
I want to attend Fabriano Acquarello in Italy – I’ll do my best to be there one day! It’s an artist’s paradise and all the painters I admire are there. I think I’ll be like a child seeing my personal heroes.
Where have you taken photos of scenery that might inspire you to paint?
I’m always looking for reference photos. Currently I’m looking for natural shots of people on the street or the beach. I live on the coast of Brazil, so I can explore natural light in a very interesting way.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from another artist?
One of the artists that gave me strength was Fabio Cembranelli. He encouraged me to invest in watercolor and said I was doing a good job. I was very happy because he is a great name in the world of watercolor.
What are you excited about working on next?
I will paint a portrait, because I really am very interested in the individual characteristics of people. Have you ever thought how frequently we do something different with our gestures and expressions? It’s never boring and it’s always a new challenge.
