Prafull Hudekar from India shared his favorite watercolor tips and techniques:
Here’s a Q&A with Prafull:
If you could only take three colors with you to paint on a deserted island, which three would you take and why?
I would prefer to take with me 3 primary colours: Perylene Red, Hansa Yellow Medium, and French Ultramarine. I can have fun creating sets of 3-colour combinations and create various secondary and complementary colours.
Describe a recent art show you participated in that was particularly inspiring.
Our art group SIMA exhibited in the Ravi Varma art gallery. I was really inspired by fellow artists’ watercolour paintings. They perfectly captured the seascapes with minute detail, using very few colours.
What were the last few photos you took that might inspire you to paint?
When I was sailing from China’s Shanghai River to Northwest Australia – while departing from the river port, I shot photos of port structures, small boat cranes and cargo operations in the lovely morning sunshine. Also, my last vacation was at the Mumbai Sasoon Dock, built in 1875. It was nice to snap pictures of the fishing boats coming in with their fresh catch and the local women balancing their shopping baskets on the their head as they walked through the crowded dock market. Lastly, I shot some 200 year-old houses near my village. Their textures and design are particularly inspiring.
What is the best piece of advice another artist has given you?
Just paint and create your own style without comparing your work to other artists.
What are you excited about working on next?
I am a passionate artist – I try to create at least one painting per day. Painting is meditation for me, it gives me immense pleasure and reduces stress.
