Why do you make art?

For me, painting is a way of creating something that emerges from an intimate, personal reflection.

How long have you been painting?

I’ve been painting for as long as I can remember.

Did you have formal art training?

I haven’t received any formal art training; my background is in technical training.

Are you a working artist or a hobbyist?

I paint primarily as a hobby, although I’ve also led workshops and taught a few classes.

Who and/or what do you look to for inspiration?

I’m primarily inspired by light and shadow, and by the beauty of everyday scenes.

What kind of music do you listen to while painting?

I enjoy listening to country and bluegrass music while painting.

Have you had a mentor?

Yes, I’ve had several mentors over the years, but no one in particular stands out.

Do you paint every day?

Yes, I paint every day. If I’m not painting, I’m drawing.

Do you paint one piece at a time or work on several at the same time?

I usually work on several paintings at the same time.

Do you create a concept piece first?

I usually make sketches before starting a painting.

Do you prefer painting in a studio or plein air?

I prefer painting plein air whenever possible, working directly from life.

How many core colors do you use?

I use approximately ten core colors in my palette.

Tubes, pans, or sticks?

I use all three: tubes, pans, and sticks.

Do you use masking fluid?

No, I don’t use masking fluid.

When do you know that your piece is finished?

I don’t really know. I stop painting when the painting starts to speak to me.
