Bob Tomanovic came to us live from the Netherlands on Friday, March 4th (and again on March 9th) via Zoom to talk about working with DANIEL SMITH Water-soluble Oils.
Here’s a quick Q&A with Bob:
Why do you make art?
My creative energy must be expressed somehow.
How long have you been painting?
I started as 7-year-old boy.
Did you have formal art training?
Yes – School of Industrial Design and Art Academy.
Are you a working artist or a hobbyist?
I am a professional artist.
Who inspires you?
I started as a watercolorist and my art hero was (and is) William Turner.
What kind of music do you listen to while painting?
Music of a friend of mine – Kip Mazui.
Have you had a mentor?
It’s pity, but no. I had to find a lot of things myself.
Do you paint every day?
In my mind – yes.
Do you paint one piece at a time or work on several at the same time?
For sure several. Sometimes I need a couple of months to finish a big painting.
Do you create a concept piece first?
Most of the time I see in my inner eye what should be executed in paint.
Do you prefer painting in studio or plein air?
I love both.
How many core colors do you use?
About 15.
Tubes, pans or sticks?
Tubes and sticks
When do you know that your piece is finished?
I “scan” my paintings, searching for the visual balance and look critically – is that exactly what I wanted to express? If yes, than it is done.
