Carlos Avelino from Brazil shared his favorite watercolor palette and techniques.
Here’s a quick Q&A with Carlos:
If you could only take three colors with you on vacation, which three would you choose?
Lunar Earth, Shadow Violet and Lunar Black – because with these three colors, I can carry out several monochromatic studies with varied effects and styles.
Tell us about a recent art show that inspired you.
It was at an exhibition at Rochemaure in France. The paintings were of everyday scenes in Brazil – places where I have spent time, represented in colors and shapes. A little bit of Brazil with all the light at any time of the year!
What recent photos have you taken that might inspire you to paint?
I recently went to the Foz do Iguaçu waterfalls in Paraná, Brazil. The strength and sound of the water is incredible. It was a very special moment that yielded many reference shots. To be in such a place, experiencing those kinds of moments, make my paintings more expressive.
What’s the best advice another artist has given you?
Observe other artists and how they work. Study and practice regularly so you can acquire a repertoire of shapes to apply to your painting in a more spontaneous way. Paint constantly so you find your style.
What are you excited about working on next?
I look forward to trying new materials and techniques. Every day I’m thinking of ways to improve my painting of everyday things, places I’ve visited, and simple scenes that grab my attention, allowing me to express myself and preserve these moments in colors and shapes.
