This cool toned, earthy red made from the mineral red jasper, is now part of the PrimaTek collection of DANIEL SMITH watercolors which are made from minerals.
The mineral for our Red Jasper Genuine comes from India’s Gwalior region and is colored a rich red from iron. Historically it was often carved as amulets, vases and other decorative items. India’s red jasper was one of stones used to beautifully embellish the Taj Mahal with other semi-precious stones that were carved and inlaid into the white marble in curvilinear flower forms. The flowers formed from red jasper are a vivid red and contrast beautifully with the green jade stems and leaves against the white marble. Spiritually, red jasper is associated with the base or root chakra and helps to ground and energize/heal the body and provide balance and protection.
As a watercolor, Red Jasper Genuine is a lovely pinkish, cool brown in light washes and a medium reddish maroon in mass tone, think red cedar bark. Beautiful on it’s own, you can see the lovely colors that Red Jasper Genuine makes as a mixer in this mixing grid painted with the watercolors from the DANIEL SMITH Essentials Watercolor Set. The Essentials Set is a split primary with two sets of primary colors, a cool triad (Hansa Yellow Light, Quinacridone Rose and French Ultramarine) and a warm triad (New Gamboge, Pyrrol Scarlet and Phthalo Blue (Green Shade).

The first line of colors (above mixing grid) across are each of the watercolors, umixed, with some water added, so that you see the vivid strength of the hues.
The first line of colors, unmixed, descending on the left have had more water added to each color and the diagonal line of paler colors, unmixed, are each color as a wash.

This mixing grid (above) image shows only the color mixes made with Red Jasper Genuine and each of the colors from the Essentials Set. The mixed colors going across are darker mixes with less water, and the mixed colors descending are more mid toned with more water added to the mixes.

Color mixes showing each Essentials Set color mixed with one another, plus Red Jasper Genuine for a 3 color mix.
This mixing grid (above) shows all the colors mixed with one another plus Red Jasper Genuine for a 3 color mix. You can see how the color mixes are toned down when Red Jasper Genuine is added to the mixes giving a wonderful earthy color.

Red Jasper Genuine Mixing Grid Diagram showing which colors were mixed for each rectangle.
Here is the diagram (above) of the color mixing plan so you can see what colors are mixed together for each rectangle. The ratio of color to color (and water added) were not done by measurement, rather by achieving an appealing color mix. There is a limitless range of potential color when color mixing due to changing the ratio of color to color, and the amount of water. Many different colors can also be created by glazing a color over another rather than by mixing alone.
