Luciano Cisi

“I was born in the Pontine Marshes, central Italy (not far from Rome), but with Nordic roots—Nordic by ancestry and Southern Italian by necessity. In short, a melting pot. Like all the people of Latina, after all, where I live.

Knowing the places to understand the people and their stories … knowing the people and their stories to understand the places. This is my way—using drawing and watercolor to represent or interpret the places. And so, the drawing becomes a chance to talk about stories linked to the places depicted, or to the moments and emotions that those images arouse, or that have been experienced.

This is why the watercolor technique often intertwines with unusual supports, such as acrylic paste backgrounds, the use of ink pens to reinforce or emphasize the contrasts of light and shadow, or collages of newspaper sheets to create almost surreal skies.

So any situation of beauty in the landscape or places—or of ugliness and urban decay—deserves the attention of a moment spent fixing them on paper, so that they speak to those who look at them and tell what is behind the simple appearance.”
